TrumpJet Flash Mixing of additives and new raw materials

TrumpJet® Flash Mixing system enables new composite sheet structures from MFC, NFC and synthetic fibers.

Micro and nano fibers: Fluidizing effect is strongly developed at very short period shear area of a TrumpJet mixer unit. That is due to the high flow volume and high speed of injection liquid and high shear. Additive is precipitated instantly in filaments, ligaments and finally into drops and droplets inside the fast moving injection stream and mixed in a flash into the main process flow. The effect is exploited for a liquid gel e.g. made from either micro fibers (MFC) or nano fibers (NFC). Once the hard-to-mix-gel enters the “injection high velocity and short, shear influenced zone” it is fluidized and the gel behaves like low viscose liquid.

The fluidizing enables mixing of the MFC or NFC material effectively into stock. This is preferably made just before headbox together with wet end chemicals to bring most of the material into the formation zone. This way the material loss is minimized and the systems stays clean. MFC and NFC materials can provide new sheet composite characteristics. The first commercial production plant is already in production use.

Gel type of MFC or NFC is fluidized and mixed effectively and finally formed to a composite board or paper production.

Synthetic fibers, extra-long bio-based fibers: Very long and extra-long synthetic or bio-based fibers are nearly impossible to mix into fiber furnish without major problems in pumps, screens, valves etc. Long, spinned “fiber ropes” can be found from the process, screen cylinders are plugged, mixing into conventional stock is troublesome. Recirculation lines inside the process will be difficult to operate. When the synthetic fiber can be added and mixed effectively just before the headbox the above problems are avoided. As a result of effects of fluidizing injection mixing system and new hygienic TIP pump it is possible to mix  extra-long fibers into fiber furnish at headbox feed area.

The synthetic fibers are fluidized mixed into headbox feed stock. The concept makes it possible to introduce the special fiber material into the process and exploit benefits of the new materials e.g. by creating new sheet composite structures and characteristics.
